Slipped discs occur when the cushion between of the spinal bones “slip” out of the ring. As an experienced orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist in Singapore, Dr Mash is well trained in early administration of slipped disc treatment for quick return to daily activities and sports.

Symptoms of a slipped disc:
  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Pain in the arms and legs
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in the arms and legs
  • Difficulty in passing or holding urine
  • Unsteady walking that is apparent in everyday activities

A slipped disc compressing a nerve for a prolonged period can lead to permanent nerve damage. Therefore, an appointment with a dedicated spine specialist should be made at your earliest availability. Dr Mash is experienced in diagnosing and treating slipped discs and other associated conditions that you may have.

Other disc related conditions:
  • Annular tear
  • Bulging disc
  • Disc degeneration
Types of treatments:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Keyhole, minimally-invasive surgery
  • Artificial disc replacement
  • Spinal fusion (ACDF/TLIF)
Sciatica and Radiculopathy

Sciatica and radiculopathy most commonly occurs when nerve roots in the spinal canal are compressed or “squeezed”. As an experienced orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist in Singapore, Dr Mash is well trained in treating them & has helped numerous patients overcome both Sciatica and Radiculopathy.

Symptoms of nerve compression:
  • Pain, tingling, or numbness going down the arms or legs
  • Weakness of the arms, hands or legs
  • Associated neck or back pain
  • Bladder or bowel changes if there is severe compression of nerves to the bladder or bowel

These symptoms usually occur on one side of the body, and can range from mild to severe in intensity. If you face any of these symptoms, it is important that you make an appointment with Dr Mash for an in-depth examination for the root cause.

Diagnostic methods:
  • X-rays
  • MRIs
  • Blood tests
Types of treatments:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medication & muscle relaxants
  • Keyhole, minimally-invasive surgery
  • Artificial disc replacement
  • Spinal fusion (ACDF/ TLIF)

As an orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist in Singapore, Dr Mash is dedicated to treating spinal conditions and associated orthopaedic problems that may be linked to the spine to restore the function and movement of the body.

Stenosis

When the spinal canal is narrowed, nerve supply to the areas at the level and distal to it are affected. As an experienced orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist in Singapore, Dr Mash is well trained in treating Stenosis & has helped numerous patients overcome Stenosis.

Figure: MRI showing severe stenosis where nerves to the legs, bladder and bowel are compressed

Symptoms of stenosis:
  • Pain down the arms and legs
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms and legs
  • Weakness of the arms or legs with muscle wasting if severe
  • Unsteady walking and loss of hand dexterity
  • Bladder or bowel disturbance
  • Neck and back pain from associated conditions

Stenosis is a serious but a very treatable condition. Because symptoms overlap with those of slipped discs, it is important that you undergo thorough diagnostic examinations with an experienced doctor.

Diagnostic methods:
  • X-rays
  • MRI of part or the whole spine
Types of treatments:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Keyhole, minimally-invasive surgery
  • Decompression of the nerves alone
  • Decompression of the nerves and stabilising the spine with screws (spinal fusion)

Dr Mash is an experienced spinal specialist and orthopaedic surgeon that can help you accurately diagnose and treat stenosis. With a range of non-invasive and minimally-invasive treatments, he can help to keep your spine healthy.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis refers to the abnormal curvature of the spine. As an experienced orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist in Singapore, Dr Mash is well trained in treating Scoliosis & has helped numerous patients overcome Scoliosis.

Figure: X-rays showing a patient with scoliosis (curved spine)

Symptoms of scoliosis:
  • A noticeable hump in the upper or lower back
  • An asymmetry in the chest wall (one side of the chest is more prominent)
  • Uneven shoulders and pelvis, with one hand brushing against one side while walking

Scoliosis is a very treatable condition. Spine deformities can continue to get more severe as we age. It is important that you consult with Dr Mash for an in-depth examination to prevent any future complications.

Diagnostic methods:
  • X-rays
  • MRIs may be performed in some cases
Types of treatments:
  • Non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy and braces
  • Decompression of the nerves alone
  • Decompression of the nerves and stabilising the spine with screws (spinal fusion)
  • Correction of the scoliosis curve and stabilising the spine with screws (spinal fusion) without nerve decompression

Scoliosis can be treated if detected in the early stages with a dedicated, experienced specialist like Dr Mash. Mild scoliosis often does not require surgical intervention and an appointment with Dr Mash will provide you with a clear path to treatment.
